Friday, December 14: All Boston Public Schools CLOSED

Superintendent Carol R. Johnson announced tonight that all Boston Public Schools will be closed on Friday, December 14. All BPS central offices, including Family Resource Centers, will be open during normal business hours. Dr. Johnson issued a statement to all BPS students, families, and staff, apologizing for the late bus arrivals on Thursday afternoon and evening caused by traffic gridlocks. Mayor Thomas M. Menino directed all Boston Centers for Youth and Families community centers to open at 7:30 a.m. on Friday morning to offer Boston parents a safe place to take their children if needed.

Boston Public Schools should be closed tomorrow too. Today's storm is bringing snow ice and rain. The rain will freeze over over night which will create slick raods and sidewalks. One more day will not hurt. I would rather go to school in the summer than in the winter. It's just safer. students who live far away from the school and teachers will have trouble traveling tomorrow. Make sure everything is safe for students to return. It's a pain in the neck hoe high the snow is getting and on top of that ice. Give us one more day to try to shovel out and to make sure everything is good to go.

As a parent of 5 children, I must say that the roads and sidewalks are too slippery to be walked on tomorrow morning, December 17. There are too many families, like mine, that live quite a distance from my children's school. It would be a MAJOR struggle to get my children to school on time and safely. PLEASE CANCEL ALL BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2007! This would give us a day to shovel out all the slush and snow from the roads and sidewalks!

I AGREE. I THINK THAT TOMOROW SHOULD BE OFF TO. IT IS GOING TO BE VERY DAGEROUS OUT THERE ESPECIALLY WITH ALL OF THE RAIN AND SNOW COMING. ITS GOING TO FREEZE, TURN INTO ICE AND MAKE IT WORSE FOR THOSE THAT HAVE TO TRAVEL ON PUBLIC TRANSPORATION AND EVEN SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION. IT WOULD NOT BE SAFE AT ALL. KIDS ARE BETTER OFF MAKING UP THE DAYS AFTER SCHOOL THAN RISKING GOING TO SCHOOL TOMOROW UNDER THOSE CIRCUMSTANCES. THANX

I agree because it was already very hard to walk on the side walks today and its going to be raining tonight. From my house to my grandma's house it takes about 5 minutes walking, but today i took almost half an hour. The BPS should give us one more day off so that people can shovel the snow on the sidewalks and then the next day it would be much easier for students to walk to school.

Hi;

Why doesn't the BPS main web site have closing announcements and up to date information about bus delays and cancellations? There isn't even a link to this blog from the BPS main web page, so people don't know it exists from the web site. I feel that BPS could do a much better job relaying timely information via the web than it does.

Kathy, thanks for your comment.

School closings are posted prominently on the home page of the BPS website during snow emergencies, and the link to this blog is there too (it's one of the rectangular "buttons" in the center of the screen), but you're right that bus delays do not appear.

The district's website certainly can be improved. We're in the process of redesigning it now and hope to have a much better version up this spring if not sooner. It will include a more prominent section for urgent notifications to families and staff.

Boston Public Schools should be closed tomorrow. They are making a big mistake if they do not close them. The rodes are very dngerous and slippery. I refuse to take my children to school in this type of condition. I do not think it is fair if they get counted as an unexcused absence , due to something not under their controll. Parents and students should be allowed to have one more day , it will not hurt them or mess with their education. School staff and superintendents need to look into this.

I think school should be closed tomorrw as well because the roads and side walk is full of snow. There are more snow now than there was on Friday.
