Linda Nathan's new book highlights Boston Arts Academy

Beacon Press tomorrow will release a new book written by Linda Nathan, founding Headmaster of the Boston Arts Academy. The Hardest Questions Aren't on the Test: Lessons from an Innovative Urban School describes the approaches that have led to the success of the city's pilot high school for the visual and performing arts. WITH A NATURAL, TALENTED LEADER AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF SPECIAL FUNDRAISING CONNECTIONS, BOSTON ARTS ACADEMY WORKS.

HOWEVER, IT IS NOT REALLY SUBJECTED TO THE INEQUITIES OF THE BPS SYSTEM. AND MOST NOTABLY, IT DOES NOT REALLY OFFER OPPORTUNITIES FOR MOST OF BOSTON'S YOUTH DUE TO ITS LIMITED ACCESS - THROUGH NO FAULT OF ITS OWN. BUT THAT IS THE REALITY.

THE LEADERSHIP FOCUSES ON ONE SCHOOL - THEIR OWN. OF COURSE THEY ATTEND MEETINGS WITH OTHERS, ETC., BUT MAINLY BECAUSE THAT IS PART OF THE GAME. WHEN PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, THE SCHOOL LOOKS OUT FOR ITSELF.

COULD THEY DO MORE TO MOVE CHANGE FORWARD IN THE BPS? WITH THEIR CLOUT, I WOULD SAY YES. BUT THAT IS NOT THEIR MISSION.
